Ramos Almost Sparks Crisis In Spain Over Regional Languages

Spain and Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos has now caused a bit of a stir in Spain after a sarcastic quote may well add to the anti-Spanish sentiment among many Catalans.

Even those of you who don’t know much about Spanish history will be aware Basque separatism and no doubt also the strong Catalan identity which usually comes with diehard support of FC Barcelona. Many Spaniards particularly hate Catalans and view them as different people.

Andalusia, the birthplace of Ramos is not one of the areas that are very stern in its call for independence of even showing off their language Andalusia. Ramos is certainly one of them.

The journalist asked Gerald Pique to answer a question in Catalan, something the Barcelona player had no problem with.

When Pique asked whether he should translate his answer to Spanish, Sergio Ramos interrupted saying that his teammate should give his answer in 'Andalusian', since the journalist "had difficulties understanding Castilian".

Castilian is what the rest of the world call Spanish.

Right after the press conference, Ramos took a picture and posted it on his Twitter account with fellow teammate and Catalan, Gerard Pique. The Real Madrid fullback later told press he was only joking and “had no problem with Catalans or the Catalan language” which basically avoids any problems.
